Who We Are

Founded in 2014, i4architecture is an imaginative and insightful architectural firm based in Northwestern Ontario. With more than 30 years of experience in architecture and building science, the i4architecture team brings a deep commitment to creating innovative, meaningful, and functional spaces that elevate the human experience while respecting the environment.

At i4architecture, we believe that architecture should be inspiring—both in form and function. Our collaborative approach brings together clients, stakeholders, consultants, and local authorities to shape spaces that are healthy, productive, and aesthetically striking. Each project reflects a thoughtful response to site, context, and community, resulting in places that are not only functional but also resonate with purpose and beauty.

We are champions of sustainable design. Our projects, such as the Lakehead University Centre for Advanced Studies in Engineering and Sciences (CASES) and the Salvation Army Journey to Life Centre, incorporate green building principles that prioritize daylighting, energy efficiency, and environmentally responsible materials. These projects exemplify how sustainability and innovation can coexist to create long-term value for clients and communities alike.

We are committed to equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) both within our firm and through the projects we deliver. We believe that inclusive design begins with inclusive teams, ones that value diverse perspectives and the communities we serve. From early engagement with underrepresented stakeholders to accessible design solutions that serve all users equitably, we ensure our projects contribute to a built environment that is welcoming, fair, and just.

i4architecture is driven by a culture of continuous improvement. Our commitment to excellence includes post-occupancy evaluations that inform future designs with real-world insights, which ensures each project performs not only at completion, but across the lifespan of the building.

With a network of trusted local consultants and specialists, we tailor every team to the unique requirements of each project. Our track record spans education, healthcare, residential, commercial, research and life sciences buildings- each one a testament to our ability to translate complex needs into elegant, enduring architecture.

Above all, we are committed to delivering quality, transparency, and value. It isn’t just the built-environment, we create environments that inspire, support, and sustain the people who use them.

Environmental Stewardship

At i4architecture, environmental and social stewardship are not add-ons, they are core to how we define good architecture. We are committed to building a practice that contributes positively to people, place, and planet.

  • Promoting Sustainable Design: We integrate principles of energy efficiency, low-carbon construction, passive design, and sustainable materials into every project.
  • Supporting Climate Action: We align our work with climate adaptation and mitigation goals, contributing to Canada’s commitments under the Paris Agreement and Ontario’s Climate Change Plan.
  • Reducing Operational Footprint: We minimize office waste, energy use, and emissions by choosing environmentally responsible products and services, and encourage active low-emission commuting.
  • Nature-Based Solutions: We value and seek to preserve local ecosystems and natural landscapes, respecting the unique geography and ecology of the Lake Superior watershed.

Social Responsibility

As a firm based in Thunder Bay, we acknowledge that we live and work on the traditional territory of the Fort William First Nation, signatory to the Robinson-Superior Treaty of 1850. We strive to honour the knowledge, resilience, and stewardship of Indigenous peoples in all aspects of our practice.

  • Listening First: We engage meaningfully with the communities we serve, particularly Indigenous, underserved, and marginalized groups, incorporating their values and needs into our work.
  • Designing for People: Our architecture aims to improve quality of life by prioritizing accessibility, health, safety, cultural expression, and social connection.
  • Fair Work Practices: We support fair wages, safe work environments, and respectful relationships in all our collaborations – with employees, clients, consultants, and contractors.
  • Local and Ethical Sourcing: We prioritize working with local vendors and consultants, and support materials and services that are ethically and responsible sourced.
